During my month long residency at DRAW international, I completed five large drawings, all charcoal and graphite on paper.

During one of my walks, I saw barbed wired embedded in a tree. It made me think about man-made intrusions to nature with barriers and boundaries. The contrast of the cold metal with the warm wood also suggested conflict, while the texture of the tree bark implies flesh struggling with its adversary.

These drawings reflect my explorations of texture and the sensation of touch during the drawing process. The conflict I observed between natural and made-made surfaces provided the catalyst for that exploration.
