Mind you, I did not, and never will, have pretensions to paint exactly like Rockwell. But all I needed was for the painting to remind you of a Rockwell.
Rockwell’s use of color made me think about the white wall of Doctor’s office. The light brown in the photo was so boring and the Niece and Doctor look as if they were sharing the same space as the wall. If the people are the stars of the painting, then I needed to make them pop out. Heck, why not go all the way, and use warm, bright cadmium orange and red?
This was my first major departure from the photo. A photo is incredibly useful as a reference, but at some point I spread my wings and find my own way. With some advice from Rockwell, of course.
