A double portrait commissioned by my good friend Robin kept me busy most of last fall.  She gave me a photo in September. She wanted to give her father, who is a physician, a painting for his surprise Christmas present.

I said heck yes and so we chose a great photo she snapped on her phone of her niece getting her check-up in his office.

Her photo conveyed so such classic Americana, it looked like it came right out of a Norman Rockwell painting!

Sure enough, it did.

This drawing of a doctor’s office by Rockwell was in the back of my mind.  A search on Google easily brought it up.

I started by simplifying the photo and editing out extra visual information. The blood pressure reader behind Doctor and Niece’s head was distracting, so I made a drawing with a simple, clean wall.

This was Step 1 and 2 in the project.
